Joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased joint with an artificial joint. The artificial joint, called a prosthesis, is made of metal, plastic, or ceramic.
Joint replacement is most commonly performed on the knees, hips, shoulders, and elbows, but it can also be done on other joints, such as the ankles, wrists, and fingers.
Knee Replacement: This procedure replaces the damaged surfaces of the knee joint, including the femur, tibia, and patella.
Hip Replacement: This procedure replaces the ball and socket joint of the hip with an artificial joint.
Shoulder Replacement: This procedure replaces the damaged surfaces of the shoulder joint, including the humerus and glenoid cavity.
