What is a Cardiologist?

A medical expert who specializes in the care of the heart and blood vessels is a cardiologist. They can also specialize in specific areas, such as heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, or heart problems that have been present since birth.

Cardiologists can treat or help prevent several cardiovascular problems. They perform physical exams and order blood work and other tests to evaluate the heart's health and function. These tests include:

  • Echocardiograms: A common test that uses sound waves to form images of the heart.

  • Stress tests: Usually involve walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike. A healthcare provider watches your heart rhythm, blood pressure, and breathing during the test.

  • Cardiac catheterization: A small tube in or near the heart collects data and may help relieve a blockage.

To become a cardiologist, a physician must attend four years of medical school and an additional six to eight years of internal medicine and specialized cardiology training.
