About Urologist

Urological problems are among the most commonly ignored health concerns in India. Men especially tend to sit with a weak urine stream, frequent nighttime bathroom trips, or blood in the urine for months — sometimes years — before seeking help. Embarrassment plays a role. So does the assumption that it's just part of getting older.

Urology covers the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra in both men and women, plus the prostate, testes, and penis in men. What makes the specialty distinctive is that urologists are both physicians and surgeons. The same doctor who orders your ultrasound can also remove your kidney stone the next day, or perform your prostate procedure the following week.

The conditions urologists manage range from extremely common — kidney stones affect a large proportion of the Indian population, partly due to climate and diet — to the complex and serious. Urological cancers. Reconstructive surgery. Male infertility. The thread running through all of it is this: earlier diagnosis almost always means simpler treatment, faster recovery, and less long-term disruption.

Blood in the urine. Difficulty starting to urinate. Flank pain that comes in waves. Recurrent urinary infections. These aren't symptoms to observe for six months at home. They're reasons to call a urologist.

Who Should Consult a Urologist?

You should consider booking an appointment with a Urologist if any of the following apply to you:

Anyone experiencing pain while urinating, blood in urine, or difficulty passing urine
Men with weak or interrupted urine stream, especially over 45
Patients with diagnosed or suspected kidney stones
Those with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Men with concerns about prostate health or elevated PSA levels
Anyone dealing with urinary incontinence (leaking, urgency)
Couples dealing with male infertility
Patients with a history of bladder, kidney, or prostate cancer

Doctor Qualification & Certifications

A trustworthy Urologist in India typically holds the following qualifications. Verifying these before your first appointment gives you confidence that you're in capable hands:

MBBS from a recognised medical college
MS (General Surgery) — a mandatory 3-year post-graduate degree
MCh (Urology) — a 3-year super-specialisation in urology
DNB (Urology) — an equally recognised qualification
Fellowship in Endourology, Robotic Surgery, or Paediatric Urology for subspecialists
Registration with the MCI/NMC and relevant State Medical Council

When searching for a Best Urologist in @city, prioritise clinicians who are transparent about their credentials and registered with the relevant national or state medical body.

Conditions Treated by a Urologist

A Urologist manages a wide range of conditions. The following are among the most commonly seen in clinical practice:

Kidney Stones (Urolithiasis)

Crystallised mineral deposits in the kidneys or urinary tract — one of the most painful conditions in medicine, and extremely common in India's climate.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that narrows the urethra and makes urination difficult — affects most men over 60.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Bacterial infections in the bladder, kidneys, or urethra — recurrent UTIs need urological investigation.

Prostate Cancer

The most common cancer in men after skin cancer — often slow-growing, but requiring expert management and long-term surveillance.

Bladder Cancer

Usually presenting as painless blood in the urine — early detection through cystoscopy significantly improves outcomes.

Male Infertility

Conditions affecting sperm production, motility, or delivery — urologists can diagnose and treat causes including varicocele and hormonal imbalance.

Symptoms That Require Consultation with a Urologist

Many patients wait too long before seeking help. If you experience any of the following, scheduling a consultation sooner rather than later is the right call:

Blood in the urine (haematuria) — even a single episode warrants evaluation
Sharp, severe flank or side pain (possibly kidney stone)
Weak, slow, or interrupted urinary stream
Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying after urination
Frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night (nocturia)
Burning or pain during urination
Pelvic or perineal discomfort or pressure
Difficulty achieving or maintaining erections (may indicate vascular or hormonal causes)

Symptoms that are intermittent, mild, or that you've "had for years" can still be significant. A Urologist can tell you what's worth investigating and what isn't — but only if you give them the chance.

Diagnosis & Tests

When you visit a Urologist, they'll begin with a thorough history and physical examination. Depending on what they find, they may recommend one or more of the following diagnostic tests:

Urine Analysis & Culture

Examines the urine for blood, infection, and protein. Culture identifies the specific bacteria causing a UTI to guide antibiotic choice.

Ultrasound KUB (Kidney-Ureter-Bladder)

A non-invasive first-line imaging test to visualise kidney stones, cysts, and prostate size.

CT Scan (Urogram)

A detailed 3D image of the urinary tract — the gold standard for mapping kidney stones and diagnosing urinary tract tumours.

PSA Blood Test (Prostate-Specific Antigen)

A blood test used to screen for prostate cancer and monitor its progression or treatment response.

Cystoscopy

A flexible scope inserted through the urethra into the bladder to directly examine the bladder lining — the most reliable way to detect bladder cancer.

Urodynamic Studies

Tests that evaluate how the bladder fills and empties — essential for diagnosing incontinence and bladder dysfunction.

Treatment & Procedures

Treatment plans are always individualised. A Urologist will discuss options with you, explain the expected outcomes, and involve you in every decision. Common interventions include:

Ureteroscopy (URS) & Laser Lithotripsy: A thin scope is passed through the ureter to reach and laser-fragment kidney stones — most patients go home the same day.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL): High-energy shock waves directed at kidney stones from outside the body to shatter them into pieces small enough to pass naturally.
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): Using an electrical loop passed through the urethra to remove obstructing prostate tissue — no skin incision needed.
Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery: Minimally invasive robotic surgery for prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers — offering precision with significantly faster recovery.
Cystoscopy & Biopsy / TURBT: Direct inspection and removal of bladder tumours through the urethra under anaesthesia.
Vasectomy & Male Fertility Surgery: Outpatient sterilisation procedures and microsurgical repairs for conditions causing male infertility.

Benefits of Early Consultation

In medicine, timing matters. Here's what early consultation with a Urologist can mean for you:

Catching kidney stones early prevents the intense pain of obstruction and potential kidney damage
BPH treated before it causes complete urinary retention avoids emergency catheterisation
Prostate cancer diagnosed at early stages has a near-100% 5-year survival rate
Treating recurrent UTIs with proper evaluation prevents kidney involvement (pyelonephritis)
Addressing male fertility issues early — some are fully reversible with surgical treatment

If you're looking for a Best Urologist in @city, early action is always the better strategy. The conditions most people deal with are more manageable — and often more treatable — when addressed promptly.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Certain symptoms should never be managed at home or waited out. Go to the nearest emergency room or call for help immediately if you experience:

Complete inability to urinate despite a strong urge (acute urinary retention — emergency)
High fever with severe back pain and chills (pyelonephritis or infected kidney stone — emergency)
Large amounts of blood in the urine (gross haematuria)
Sudden onset testicular pain and swelling in young men (possible testicular torsion — surgical emergency within 6 hours)
Trauma to the genitals or lower abdomen with difficulty urinating

These are not situations for a scheduled appointment. Act immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is blood in urine always serious?

Ans. Any amount of visible blood in the urine (haematuria) should be evaluated by a urologist promptly — it is never something to ignore. Common causes include kidney stones, bladder infections, or benign prostatic bleeding, but it can also be an early sign of bladder or kidney cancer. Most causes are treatable, but early diagnosis is essential.

Q2: What is the difference between a urologist and a nephrologist?

Ans. A nephrologist is an internal medicine specialist who manages kidney diseases medically — including chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, and kidney failure. A urologist is a surgeon who treats urinary tract and male reproductive conditions, including kidney stones, tumours, and obstruction. If a kidney stone needs removing, that's urology. If kidneys are failing due to disease, that's nephrology.

Q3: At what age should men start getting prostate checks?

Ans. Men with average risk should discuss prostate screening (PSA test) with their doctor from age 50. Men with a family history of prostate cancer or of African heritage should start at 40–45. The decision is personalised — your urologist can help you understand the benefits and limitations of PSA screening based on your individual profile.

Q4: How painful are kidney stones?

Ans. Kidney stone pain is frequently described as among the worst pain a person can experience — often compared to childbirth. The pain occurs when a stone moves from the kidney into the narrow ureter. Smaller stones may pass on their own with pain relief and hydration, but larger ones usually require medical or surgical intervention. Don't try to manage severe stone pain at home.

Q5: Can I prevent kidney stones from coming back?

Ans. Yes, to a significant extent. After analysing your stone composition (from a passed stone or surgery), a urologist can identify whether your stones are calcium, uric acid, or struvite type and recommend specific dietary changes — reducing sodium and protein, increasing fluid intake, sometimes adding medication. Without this, recurrence rates are high.

Q6: How much does a Urologist consultation cost in @city?

Ans. Consultation fees in @city generally range from ₹500 to ₹2,500 at clinics, and ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 at corporate hospitals or for senior consultants. Many hospitals accept CGHS, ESIC, and major health insurance policies. Through NectarPlus Health, you can check exact fees before booking — no surprises.

Q7: Can I book a Urologist appointment online through NectarPlus Health?

Conclusion

Urological conditions are not just about physical discomfort — untreated kidney stones can damage your kidneys, unmanaged BPH can lead to complete urinary failure, and undetected bladder cancer is far harder to treat once it spreads.
